Brush off your crossover dribble and Reebok pumps! 2K sports has released the 17th installment in the NBA 2K franchise with NBA 2K16. New players, new rosters, new mechanics… all of the usual components to a new NBA 2K game. The game features 3 different cover athletes and a special edition with “Jo”, a.k.a. Michael Jordan, a.k.a. the Greatest Of All Time (your LeBron/Kobe arguments are invalid). Can you become the greatest of all time? I doubt it, since there is no way you’re better than me… And if you are, then it’s just because of lag or you’re a hacker >:[
Let’s find out how NBA 2K stacks up to the competition. I’ll see you on the hardwood.
Blue Ball Score: 19 out of 25 balls
NBA 2K has a long-standing history for being great at providing a true basketball experience. You will get rushes of adrenaline as you ferociously crossover an opponent out of his shoes, or by posterizing a big man with your guard. How’s them nutz taste? Getcha some big fella! AND ONE! In your f#@king face! These are all phrases that can be heard three doors down from my house as I put these kids on ice skates.
If you are new to the basketball court in gaming, the controls can be a bit much at first. However, with a little practice, you’ll have them down pat in no time. The level of ball control in your hands is astonishing, and we know a thing or two about balls here at BBR. Animations are crisp and clean, unlike my player’s protective cup. For all you seasoned vets, you will have no problem with the controls in NBA 2K16. Offensive and defensive controls should come with no surprises here.
One thing that I did find surprising was the difficulty. The developers seem to have kicked it up a notch as I found myself turning the ball over more at first than in previous releases. The CPU AI seems to have been playing brain games and/or yoga in the offseason as they seemed to know what I was going to do before I even did it (HACKERS!). The usual tricks didn’t seem to work as consistently in this game, so be prepared to take some new approaches to reach the rim this time around. However, with a few adjustments, you’ll be ball-slamming and rim-racking your way to victory in no time.
Solid controls, which is the MOST important aspect to any basketball game, earns NBA 2K16 4.5 blue basketballs.
Aside from the story, MyCareer is exactly what you would expect. You play a few high school games, sign with a college to play a few college games, and then head to the draft where you’ll begin your NBA career. Endorsement deals pop up. Get fans, get money, get famous! And above all, play your heart out for a chance to make it to the hall! You make several decisions along the way that can decide your path, but overall it is the basics of an NBA career. Hit that stat sheet!
For all you clipboard peeps out there, MyGM is for you. Take on the role of an actual GM and run an NBA team. You decide everything, and I mean everything. Even the concession prices. Keep those fans happy or your pants will get a lot lighter from a thinner billfold. You call the shots and it’s up to you to keep the cash rolling in. Lead your team to victory from behind the curtain and be the best business man/woman you can be.
Although the story was as dull as ditch water, MyCareer and MyGM keep you in the game and earns 3.5 balls.
The third option is MyTeam. Here you can create custom jerseys and logos, along with picking your own color schemes and design your own court floors. Add all of these to the ability to name the team yourself and you have truly made it your own. Play online as you pit your team against other player’s teams where your players will be outfitted with your custom jerseys/logos and you will be playing on one of the team’s custom floors. Good luck with that too!
The last options, which is by far my personal favorite, is MyPark mode. Here you will take your created player out into a streetball environment and play against other player’s creations. I would suggest you level your player up a bit prior to throwing him to the proverbial street wolves. You don’t want to see him get slaughtered do you? After all, you made him what he is, so get him up to par first. There are two types of games that can be played. In true streetball fashion, simply walk up to an empty “waiting zone” on the sideline of an existing game and you got next. Oh yeah… Good luck with that too!
Graphics are amazing in 2K16. As I mentioned before, the animations are clean and crisp. Crossovers, spin moves, dunks, passes, alley-oops, it all looks great. The “scan your face” option for create-a-player seems to have improved and the level of customization for your created player is staggering. You could spend hours fine-tuning your player to make him nearly EXACTLY like you in every way. There’s an option to match everything from your nose to your jump shot to that nasty crossover you use on the kid down the street.
Great graphics and typical sound earn 4 balls.
In conclusion, this is another great 2K game that follows in the footsteps of its predecessors and continues to improve each year. Overlook the story mode and you have another great single-player campaign to go along with the usual stellar online play. NBA 2K16 earns a very respectable 19 total balls, and I would recommend it to any NBA fan.
